The inaugural 2009 season of the Professional American Beach Soccer League (PABSL) came to an exciting conclusion on the 8th of November in beautiful Santa Cruz, California. The day featured two very important match ups that would decide the final rankings of the PABSL teams. The 2009 PABSL Championship Match between Team Pugg and Team 99 showcased 4 players from the US Beach Soccer National Team. The 3rd-4th Place Match featured Team Golme, a Los Angeles based team, fighting for 3rd place against the young Brazillian side of San Francisco Beach Soccer Club.
The first game of the day was the 3rd-4th place match featuring Team Golme and San Francisco Beach Soccer Club. With some key injuries, Team Golme were considered the underdogs. However, Golme Captain Ronnie Silva took charge with a goal and an assist late in the game to give his team a fighting chance. Under the leadership of Anderson Silveira, SF BSC played an attractive, skillful brand of beach soccer. The San Francisco team was organized defensively and created chances in the attack. The match ended 3-3 and both teams went scoreless in the overtime period. The dramatic penalty kick shootout was suspenseful and entertaining. After 8 tense rounds of penalty kicks highlighted with incredible saves by both goalkeepers, SF BSC came away with the victory 5 penalties to 4.
More than one hundred spectators crowded the sidelines for the 2009 PABSL Championship Match between the two undefeated sides Team 99 and Team Pugg. The opening goal was scored by Team 99, which includes 3 members of the US Beach Soccer National Team: Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz), Brendon Taguinod (Santa Cruz), and Luis Montanez (Hayward). Before the end of the 1st period, Team Pugg leveled the score on a bicycle kick from 15 yards out. The 2nd period was hard-fought and ended 2-1 with the only goal being tallied by Team 99. After Coach Jevin Albuquerque's half-time talk with his players, Team 99 caught fire and scored 4 unanswered goals in the 3rd and final period. Final Score: 6-1. Team 99 were crowned the 2009 PABSL Champions and the trophy was escorted to 99 Bottles in Downtown Santa Cruz.
